We’re in the Mitten State (that’s what it’s called, right?), and happy to be here. The drive up yesterday was long, but not too stressful. My mom’s Christmas present to me was joining me for the drive, so I drove the whole way and she handed toys and opened packages and kept the snacks flowing. I’m so glad she was able to come with us!
We’re staying with the wonderful folks who hosted me and Silas last time I came, when I directed Romeo and Juliet. It’s so fun to see them again. This stay, I think, will be a lot different, and I’m hoping easier on all of us, than my last one. Last time, Silas was 15 months old, I did the drives (both directions!) by myself, we were here for eight weeks (it’s only four this time), and I found out I was pregnant two days before I left. I’m feeling much more confident this time.
The play, incidentally is The Duchess of Malfi, by John Webster, at Pigeon Creek Shakespeare. It will be part of the Lake Effect Fringe Festival in Grand Rapids. I’m very excited, as I’ve been planning this project for a long, long time.
Today, we unpacked everything (and there was a lot of “everything,” since we were coming from Christmas celebrations at my dad’s house and both of JC’s grandmas’), and then visited the library and the beach.
I love Michigan. It’s beautiful and friendly, and even in the winter, there is a lot to do. I wouldn’t want to move here–Virginia is my home–but I do enjoy the long term visits I’ve had here.
We nearly blew away, but the kids were impressed with Lake Michigan. “It’s so…BIG!” they kept saying. Well, yes. That’s why they call them the Great Lakes.
