Little Flock

Our church chooses a theme verse each year. This year, it’s Luke 12:29-32:

And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.

We’re doing a series right now where each pastor, and a guest preacher, is doing a sermon on this text. During today’s, which focused a lot on anxiety and managing it, it occurred to me that I tend to handle the Big Terrifying Things kind of okay. I have a short time of freaking the heck out, and then I pull it together and move through it one step at a time.

It’s the lower-level, non-life-threatening, ordinary stress of life that gets to me. The low-level background buzz of non-urgent but still not great health things for people I love, the monitoring the ins and outs of our budget, the continual dumpster fire of 21st century American politics…the stuff that is just always present, needs to be dealt with, but isn’t acute or overwhelming.

I kind of wish I could be the reverse. It’s nice that I can process the extreme stuff reasonably well, but (luckily), that is stuff that, by definition, doesn’t come along all that often. Better than wasting cycles on the everyday problems, every day.
