This is a multi-part account our recent trip. Read Part 1 and Part 2.
Our third major stop was Manuel Antonio. This was the one part I think we all could have done without. There’s not much of anything to do besides go to the beach. None of us are beach people, particularly. It was fun for a few days, but we would have had more fun if we had just stayed in La Fortuna longer.
Manuel Antonio is also very much a spring break destination town. Our hostel was in the basement of a bar, and none of the many reviews I read thought to mention that. Everything was much more expensive than it had been everywhere else. It was…fine. But I don’t think we’d go back there.
We did very much enjoy the beach, just maybe less of it would have been better. We found an area that was shaded by some cliffs through most of the day, where the kids could play in some tide pools, so we alternated between there and the main beach area. This was right next to the national park, and we saw most of the wildlife the park is known for without going in, as several people we met there told us they didn’t feel that the park had been worthwhile. Silas finally learned to do a reliable backfloat. And Petra kept “current sliding.” We met a bunch of iguanas and grackles, rode the waves, enjoyed some epic sunsets.
When it was time to head back to Liberia to catch our plane, I think we were all ready to come home. We had a good trip, but we missed our friends, our own beds, our valley, our cats.
