Morocco has a lot of street cats. In most locations, they don’t have any kind of animal control or organizations working to spay and neuter them, so cats proliferate. Vaccination is not super common for strays, especially in rural areas, so there’s a real problem with rabies. Petra had a hard time because she really wanted to pet every cat she saw, but it could be dangerous. She settled for counting them (often spotting over 100 in a day!) and taking pictures.
In Fez, our guide told us that people build shelters outside of their homes and buildings, to attract cats. It’s considered good luck to be chosen by a cat.
