Hmad took us to an oasis in the desert, created by hand-dug wells and irrigation canals. A whole community created this together around 70 years ago.
Each family has a separate agricultural plot in the oasis to grow whatever they want. The amount of time each family gets to have their fields irrigated is related to the number of people who they originally had helping in the building process. They make little mud dams to shift which fields are getting water each day.
They truly created a peaceful and green space for growing all kinds of plants, from peppers to palms.
The oasis was so beautiful and peaceful, and cooler than the area around it. I asked Hmad if people ever came there to hang out. He laughed and said Americans always asked that. People only go there for work, which is wild to me, because it was the coolest and loveliest place we had seen in that area, by a lot. But maybe they would get sucked into messing with the plants, the way I do every time I intend to just go read in the hammock.
