Lisbon – Statue Of D. José I

This statue is in Praça do Comércio, which was an area that was leveled by the earthquake in 1755 and then rebuilt.

I don’t exactly know why, but we all took a lot of pictures of it. It many details, intriguing decorations, an unexpected elephant.

I learned later that when it was unveiled, the queen (D. Mariana Vitória) said that the face of the figure was hideous. He looked fine to me.
